An intermittent water treatment problem can be harder to solve than a complete failure. The water may seem fine in the morning, develop an odor at night or leave stains only after several showers. By the time a technician arrives, the problem may have disappeared.

Do not start by adjusting every control or ordering new equipment. First, identify when the problem appears, which fixtures are affected and what the treatment system was doing beforehand. Those details can reveal whether the system is being overwhelmed, bypassed or failing to complete part of its normal cycle.

Write down exactly what changes

A useful description is more specific than saying the water is bad. Record what you can see, smell or feel. Examples include an odor from the cold tap, staining in a toilet, slippery or sticky water, sediment in a tub, spotting on glassware or a return of scale around a faucet.

Note the fixture where you first noticed it. Check another cold water fixture and another hot water fixture. If only one faucet is affected, its aerator, supply line or drain may be the source. Track timing and household demand

A system can produce acceptable water during light use but allow untreated or partly treated water through during heavy demand. Look at the controller without changing its programming. Record the displayed time, remaining capacity, error message and cycle position. If the displayed time is wrong after a power interruption, the system may operate when the household is using water or may miss its expected schedule.

If poor water appears shortly before regeneration and improves afterward, the unit may be running out of treatment capacity too soon. If the problem starts immediately after regeneration, the cycle may not be completing correctly or water may be reaching the fixtures before the system has returned to normal service.

Do not unplug a unit while it is cycling unless its instructions or a qualified service provider tell you to do so. Interrupting a cycle can leave a valve in an unexpected position.

Look for an accidental bypass

Many treatment systems have a bypass valve that allows water to flow around the equipment. A valve can be left partly open after plumbing work, seasonal maintenance or a service visit.

Compare the valve position with the labels or operating instructions attached to the equipment. Take a clear photo before touching anything. If the position is uncertain, send the photo to the installer or service company instead of forcing the handle. A stuck valve can break, and different valve designs use different service positions.

Ask whether any other plumbing work occurred before the problem started. A new appliance connection, repaired shutoff valve or changed irrigation setting can alter flow or create a route around the treatment equipment.

If the equipment uses salt, treatment media, cartridges or chemical solution, inspect the visible supply level. Do not assume that a full looking tank means the material is feeding correctly. Salt can form a hard crust with an empty space below it, cartridges can restrict flow and solution pickup tubes can lose their prime.

Record how quickly supplies appear to be used. A sudden change in consumption can matter in either direction. No apparent use may indicate that the system is not cycling or drawing material. Unusually rapid use may indicate repeated cycling, a leak or an incorrect setting.

Check the floor and drain area for moisture, salt residue, loose tubing or signs of repeated overflow. Photograph anything unusual. Avoid opening pressurized housings or disconnecting drain lines during this inspection.

Compare treated and untreated water carefully

If your plumbing has a clearly identified untreated sampling point, such as an outdoor faucet installed before the treatment equipment, compare it with a treated cold water faucet. Label each sample and collect them close together in time.

This comparison can show whether the incoming water changed or whether the treatment system stopped addressing the same incoming condition. It is less useful if you do not know where the plumbing branches. An outdoor faucet may be treated, untreated or connected through a separate line.

Ask the service company to confirm the plumbing layout if it is unclear. Do not operate the bypass simply to create an untreated sample unless you understand the valve and the consequences for downstream equipment.

Know when to stop troubleshooting

Stop using the affected water and contact the appropriate water supplier or qualified service provider if there is an unexplained major change in color, odor or sediment, especially when neighbors notice the same change. A private well owner may need the source and treatment equipment evaluated separately.

Call promptly if the system is leaking, repeatedly draining, making an unfamiliar continuous noise, displaying an error or leaving standing water near electrical components. Shut off equipment only when you know the correct procedure and can do so without entering a wet electrical area.

Give the service company evidence it can use

Before scheduling service, assemble the equipment model, controller photos, valve positions, maintenance history and your observation log. Ask the company whether it services that exact equipment and what diagnostic work is included in the visit.

Useful questions include:

Can you test the incoming and treated water during the same visit? Will you check actual flow and regeneration operation instead of only changing settings? Can you identify whether the problem comes from water demand, plumbing configuration, depleted media or a control failure? Will you provide the test findings and recommended correction in writing?

If a provider immediately recommends replacement without documenting the failure, ask what measurement or inspection supports that conclusion. After service, repeat the comparison that exposed the issue. Use the same fixtures, similar household demand and the same point in the treatment cycle. Keep the observation log until the system has performed consistently through normal high demand periods and at least one complete scheduled cycle.
