An under-sink reverse osmosis system may look simple on a quote: filters, a membrane, a storage tank and a dedicated faucet. The actual installation has to connect several parts without creating leaks, cabinet damage, poor drainage or disappointing water flow.

Understanding the process helps you compare installers and inspect the finished work. You do not need to direct every fitting. You do need to know what the installer should check, what choices require your approval and what should be demonstrated before the job is complete.

The visit starts with confirming what the system will serve

The installer should first confirm which fixtures and appliances will receive treated water. A common arrangement supplies a dedicated drinking water faucet. Some systems also feed a refrigerator or ice maker, but that additional run affects tubing length, routing and available flow.

Ask the installer to mark every intended connection before work begins. If the refrigerator is included, find out how the line will pass through cabinets, walls or floors. A vague plan to route it later can leave you with exposed tubing or an unexpected hole.

This is also the time to confirm what will remain untreated. An under-sink system does not normally treat every faucet in the house. Make sure the proposed installation matches the problem you are trying to solve.

The installer checks the cabinet and nearby plumbing

Before opening packages or drilling, the installer should inspect the space under the sink. The storage tank and filter assembly need stable positions that do not interfere with the garbage disposal, drain piping, shutoff valves or items you regularly store.

The cabinet check should cover:

  • Whether the cold-water shutoff closes properly
  • Whether existing supply lines or drain fittings show corrosion, moisture or damage
  • Where the filter assembly can be mounted and serviced
  • Whether the storage tank can stand securely
  • Where tubing can run without being crushed by drawers, hinges or stored items
  • Whether an electrical outlet is required for any pump or monitoring feature

A weak shutoff valve or deteriorated drain should be discussed before the installer connects new equipment to it. Ask whether correcting that condition is included in the quoted work or requires separate approval.

The faucet location is chosen before drilling

A dedicated faucet needs a location that is reachable, drains into the sink and leaves enough clearance below the counter for its mounting hardware and tubing. The installer should also check for soap dispensers, sink clips, cabinet walls and reinforcement beneath the countertop.

Some sinks or countertops have an unused opening that can accept the faucet. If a new hole is required, ask the installer to show you the exact location and confirm that the countertop or sink material can be drilled with the tools and method being used.

Do not treat faucet placement as a minor cosmetic choice. A faucet installed too close to a backsplash can be awkward to operate. One placed outside the sink bowl can drip onto the counter. Approve the position before drilling begins.

The cold-water supply connection is installed

After shutting off the cold-water supply, the installer adds a connection that sends feed water to the treatment system. The connection should be compatible with the existing valve and supply line. Tubing should enter fittings cleanly and should not be sharply bent or pulled sideways.

The hot-water line should not be used as the feed connection. If the plumbing is difficult to identify, ask the installer to verify which line is cold before making the connection.

Once connected, the feed-water valve for the system should remain accessible. You should be able to identify it later if the system needs service or if a leak develops.

The drain connection is placed and aligned

Reverse osmosis systems send a reject stream to the drain while producing treated water. The installer therefore needs an approved drain connection that works with the sink plumbing and the equipment instructions.

Placement matters. The connection should not be positioned where debris from the garbage disposal is likely to obstruct it. The opening in the drain pipe and the opening in the connection fitting must line up. Poor alignment can cause noise, restricted drainage or a leak around the fitting.

Ask how the installation prevents drain water from moving back toward the treatment system. The correct arrangement depends on the equipment and local plumbing requirements, so the installer should be able to explain the chosen connection instead of simply pointing to a clamp on the pipe.

The filter assembly and storage tank are positioned

The filter assembly may be mounted to a cabinet wall or placed in another supported position allowed by its design. Either way, there must be room to replace cartridges and inspect connections later. A filter housing that fits only when forced against a drain pipe is not truly serviceable.

The storage tank also needs a stable location. Its air valve, water connection and shutoff should remain reachable. The tank should not rest where a cabinet fastener, rough edge or stored object could damage it.

Before the parts are secured, ask the installer to show you how filters will be changed. This simple demonstration reveals whether the installation leaves enough working space for future maintenance.

The tubing is cut, connected and supported

The system uses separate tubing paths for feed water, treated water, tank water and drain flow. The installer should follow the equipment markings rather than relying on tube color alone. Tubing should be cut squarely, inserted fully and routed without kinks.

Long loose loops can snag cleaning supplies or get pinched when items are returned to the cabinet. Tubing should have enough slack for service, but it should also be organized and supported.

If treated water is being sent to a refrigerator, inspect that entire route. Ask where connections are located and whether any hidden fitting will remain accessible. A connection buried behind a finished surface is harder to inspect and repair.

The faucet and optional appliance line are connected

After the faucet is mounted, the treated-water tubing is connected beneath it. The faucet base should sit firmly and face the correct direction without twisting when operated.

If a refrigerator line is part of the job, the installer should confirm that the appliance connection is compatible and that any old filter arrangement has been addressed. Ask whether the refrigerator's internal filter stays in place, is bypassed or still requires routine replacement. The answer depends on the appliance, so it should not be assumed.

The system is pressurized and checked for leaks

With the connections complete, the installer opens the water supply and allows the system to pressurize. Every new fitting should be checked by touch and sight, not merely observed from the cabinet opening.

The installer should inspect the feed connection, filter housings, tank connection, faucet tubing and drain connection. Because some leaks appear only after pressure builds, this inspection should be repeated after the system has operated for a while.

Look at the cabinet floor before items are put back. A dry paper towel placed beneath connections can reveal small amounts of moisture that are difficult to see on a dark cabinet surface.

The system is flushed according to its instructions

New filters, tubing and the storage tank generally require flushing before the water is used for drinking or cooking. The required sequence depends on the specific system. It may include filling and emptying the tank, running the faucet or discarding initial batches of water.

Ask the installer to explain exactly when the water is ready to use. If flushing will continue after the installer leaves, get the remaining steps in writing. You should know which faucet to open, whether the tank valve stays open and what indicates that the flush is complete.

Temporary cloudiness or small particles during initial flushing should still be explained. Do not accept an open-ended instruction to keep running water without knowing the expected endpoint.

Operation is verified at the faucet and drain

The final check should cover more than the absence of leaks. The installer should operate the dedicated faucet, confirm that water reaches any connected appliance and verify that the system starts and stops as intended.

Ask the installer to demonstrate:

  • Which valve shuts off feed water to the system
  • Which valve isolates the storage tank
  • How the faucet behaves when the tank is full and when it is refilling
  • Where drain flow can be heard or observed during production
  • How to recognize continuous draining that may indicate a problem
  • Where to check first if water appears in the cabinet

If the provider uses a water test to verify operation, ask what is being measured, where each sample is taken and what result the equipment is expected to produce for your source water. A single unexplained meter reading is less useful than a clearly identified comparison between feed water and treated water.

The handoff should cover maintenance and records

Before the installer leaves, collect the equipment manual, model information and a list of replacement components. Ask which maintenance tasks are based on elapsed time and which depend on water use or water quality.

The handoff should also identify who to contact for leaks, slow faucet flow, unusual drain noise, taste changes or a system that runs continuously. If the provider offers installation or service coverage, ask when that coverage begins and what documentation is required.

Photograph the finished cabinet before putting supplies back. Include the tubing routes, valve positions, filter labels and tank connection. Those images can help during future service, especially if items later block the view.

A practical completion checklist

Before considering the installation finished, confirm all of the following:

  • The system serves every fixture and appliance listed in the agreement
  • The faucet position was approved and the base is secure
  • The cabinet and existing plumbing are dry
  • All valves remain accessible and have been identified
  • Tubing is supported, unpinched and protected from stored items
  • The drain connection is secure and properly aligned
  • There is enough room to replace filters
  • The required flushing procedure is complete or clearly documented
  • The faucet delivers water and any appliance connection works
  • You received model, filter and service information

A good installation should leave you knowing how the system is connected, how to shut it off and what happens next. If those answers are unclear, the job is not fully handed over, even if water is already coming from the faucet.
