Installing a water treatment system is not the same as putting it into service. After the equipment is connected, the installer still needs to start it, flush it, program its controls and confirm that water is moving through it correctly. This final process is commonly called commissioning.
Good commissioning answers a simple question: Is the installed system operating as intended in this particular home? A homeowner does not need to understand every valve or control setting, but should know what the installer is checking and what information to request before accepting the job.
Start with a review of the completed plumbing
Before turning on the equipment, the installer should inspect the finished plumbing path. Ask the installer to show you where untreated water enters, where treated water leaves and which fixtures receive treated water. Confirm whether outdoor faucets, irrigation lines, kitchen cold water or other branches have been intentionally included or excluded.
Look for pipes and fittings that appear supported rather than hanging from the equipment. Check the floor around each connection for moisture. If the system uses a drain, follow the drain line to its discharge point and ask how the connection prevents wastewater from flowing backward into the treatment equipment.
You should also be shown the main water shutoff and the treatment system bypass. Ask the installer to demonstrate which valve positions place the equipment in service and which positions bypass it. Do not rely on remembering an explanation given from across the room. Operate the controls yourself while the installer is present.
Restore water pressure carefully
When water is returned to the plumbing, valves should be opened in a controlled way. A sudden rush of water can move air, loose material or treatment media through the system. The installer may open a nearby faucet while the equipment fills so trapped air has somewhere to escape.
Some noise and cloudy-looking water can occur while air leaves newly opened plumbing. The installer should continue the startup until flow becomes stable and should investigate persistent leaks, sputtering or unusual equipment movement rather than dismissing them.
Watch the pressure while more than one fixture is running. The purpose is not simply to prove that water comes out of a faucet. It is to confirm that the installed system and its valve settings allow practical flow during normal household use.
Flush the equipment as required
Many treatment systems require an initial flush before the water is ready for normal use. The exact procedure depends on the equipment and the treatment media inside it. It may involve sending water to a drain, running a service faucet or completing a controlled operating cycle.
Ask what is being flushed out, where the water is going and how the installer determines that flushing is complete. Do not assume that a quick faucet check replaces the startup procedure specified for the equipment.
If the system includes several treatment stages, ask whether each stage has its own preparation or flushing requirement. A sediment filter, carbon filter, softener, ultraviolet unit and drinking water system do different jobs. They should not be treated as though they share one universal startup sequence.
Program the operating controls
Automatic equipment may need settings for household water use, water characteristics, regeneration timing, backwash frequency or other operating conditions. The labels differ by system, so focus on what information was used to select each setting.
Ask the installer to show you the programmed values on the control panel. Find out which settings are based on the water test, which depend on the number of people in the home and which are fixed equipment requirements. If a setting is only an initial estimate, ask what condition would lead to an adjustment.
Confirm what happens after a power interruption. Some controls retain their programming but lose the clock setting. Others may need more attention. You should know what to check before an outage happens.
Run the system through its important functions
A complete commissioning visit should exercise the functions that can reasonably be tested. For a backwashing filter or softener, that may include starting a manual cycle and observing the drain flow. For a drinking water system, it may include filling, flushing and checking the storage tank and dispensing faucet. For ultraviolet equipment, it may include confirming power, indicator status and alarm operation.
Ask what each sound, display or valve movement means while the system is running. You do not need a technical lesson on every internal step. You do need to recognize the difference between normal operation and a condition that calls for service.
If a full automatic cycle cannot be demonstrated, ask the installer to explain why and how its operation was otherwise verified. The answer should identify a specific check, not merely state that the equipment is factory tested.
Check every connection under operating conditions
A dry fitting before startup can leak once it is under pressure or while water is flowing to a drain. The installer should recheck plumbing connections, valve bodies, filter housings, tubing, tanks and drain fittings after the equipment has operated.
Inspect the surrounding floor yourself. Use a dry paper towel around accessible joints if moisture is difficult to see. Ask about any condensation so you can distinguish it from a plumbing leak later.
For equipment connected to electricity, verify that cords and adapters are secure and protected from routine splashing. Ask which circuit powers the system and what the equipment does if power is lost.
Verify the result the system was selected to deliver
Commissioning should connect the finished installation to the original water problem. The right verification depends on what the system is supposed to change. It may involve a water measurement, observation of a completed treatment cycle or confirmation that water is routed through the correct treatment stages.
Ask where the installer collects untreated and treated samples. A sample taken from the wrong location may not show what the equipment is doing. Also ask whether the system must operate or flush before a meaningful treated sample can be collected.
Do not substitute taste or appearance for a measurement when the treatment recommendation was based on a measured water condition. At the same time, do not assume that one reading proves every stage is working. Ask which result is being checked and what that check does not establish.
Review normal operation before the installer leaves
The homeowner handoff should be specific to the installed equipment. Have the installer show you how to place the system in bypass, read the main display, identify an alarm and start any homeowner-controlled function. Ask which valves should normally remain open and which should remain closed.
Find out what supplies the system requires and where they go. Ask what you may safely inspect without disassembling equipment. You should also know which symptoms justify an immediate call, such as continuous draining, loss of water pressure, leaking or an alarm that does not clear.
Record the initial settings or photograph the control screens with the installer's permission. Keep the equipment model information, startup settings and service contact together. This gives you a reference if a setting changes or another technician works on the system.
Ask what happens after startup
Some results can be checked during commissioning. Others depend on normal water use or another complete operating cycle. Ask whether any follow-up check is part of the installation and what you should observe before it occurs.
Request clear instructions for reporting a problem. The provider should tell you what information will help, such as the display message, valve position, time of the operating cycle or location of a leak. Clear reporting can make a return visit more productive.
If the installer changes a setting after startup, ask why it was changed and have the final value recorded. The information left with you should describe the system as it is actually operating, not merely its original planned configuration.
Use a final commissioning checklist
Before treating the installation as complete, confirm that the water path has been explained, the bypass has been demonstrated, required flushing is complete, controls are programmed, important functions have been tested, connections have been checked under pressure and the intended treatment result has been addressed.
You should also know the normal valve positions, what the display should show, which sounds are expected, what conditions require a service call and whether another check remains to be completed.
If you are still choosing an installer, ask each company to describe its commissioning and homeowner handoff process before you hire. A provider should be able to explain how it will move from connected equipment to a verified working system.
